3 New Kid-Friendly Ways to Experience Southern California’s Beaches

Posted on January 23, 2012 | 6:00am | Travel Costa Mesa

If you and your family are staying in Costa Mesa, you’ve probably set aside plenty of time to hit up one of the nearby beaches including Huntington Beach, Newport Beach and Laguna Beach. In fact, Costa Mesa is close enough for you and your family to enjoy 42 miles of pristine Southern California beaches! Instead of spending all of your beach days fighting for umbrella space, why not try one of these 3 great, family-friendly activities that will bring a whole new meaning to spending the day at the beach. If you want more ideas, you can also start by purchasing an Otter Kayak so they can have fun in the sea is calm.

Here are 3 kid-friendly ocean activities for you and your family to enjoy while staying in Costa Mesa, CA:

1. Banzai Surf School

Open all year round, this Huntington Beach surf school is one of the best ways to get your kids’ feet wet (pun intended!) with surfing, arguably Southern California’s favorite sport. Parents can sign their kids up for a 2-hour private lesson with instruction, surfboard and wetsuit provided. Groups of two are only $99 per person, while groups of four or more are $79, so why not sign yourself up for a lesson as well? It’s a great chance to learn something new and spend some quality time with your family doing something you’ll never forget.

2. The Ocean Institute’s Tall Ship Programs

Do your kids dream of being a pirate? Why not give them a day of adventure on the high seas with the Ocean Institute’s Pyrate Adventure Sail, one of their tall ship programs open to the public. Signup for a day of ocean-faring exploration and learn how to hoist the sail, fire the cannons and fight off pirates! You and your family will set out in the Spirit of Dana Point, a traditionally built, accurate replica of a 1770s privateer used during the American Revolution.

Open to the public from 10am-3pm most Saturdays and Sundays, the Ocean Institute is nationally known for its hands-on marine science, environmental education and maritime history programs. The Ocean Institute is closed to the public Monday through Friday, so make sure you leave room over the weekend to visit.

3. Wildlife & Beach Tours

Are you interested in showing your kids the natural beauty and ecosystems of a Southern California beach? Then why not sign the whole family up for an OC Wildlife & Beach Tour? Choose from two options, either a tide pools tour or nature preserve tour, and experience the beauty of Southern California marine life up close and personal.

Check out this great video of one of their ½ day ecotours!
