Close your eyes. Use your imagination. Open your mind. And you’ll be transported momentarily to a world of wonders.

That’s what the creators of the latest Cirque du Soleil production — known as “KURIOS™ — Cabinet of Curiosities” — to show at Costa Mesa’s Orange County Fair and Event Center starting Oct. 15 through Nov. 29 want you to feel.

When seeing this show, you’ll delve into another world for a moment, where seeing is disbelieving, where you’re immersed in a mysterious and fascinating disorientation of your senses and where, in the end, your perceptions are challenged. You’re then left to ask: “Is this real or just my imagination?”

When you’re left to the depths of your imagination while watching this show, you’ll then step into the world of the cabinets of curiosities, who are themselves ancestors of museums —like aristocrats, merchants and scientists.

One of these characters is the Seeker, who’s convinced that there exists a hidden world — a world where the grandest ideas and dreams await. Only by watching this show can you find out what that world precisely is.

Reflecting the powers of imagination and curiosity, the show’s setting takes place in the retro-future, the environment at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution without being exclusively tied to that period. The setting is blurry, in other words, with no definite place and time, although it loosely evokes the start of the industrial era. It’s in essence a mechanical world celebrating the coming together of pre-existing objects — like the bugle and the typewriter — into something different, something unseen elsewhere. These objects come with their own histories and, in their creations particularly for this show, have taken on new meaning for the audience.

Pointing to the strength of the human imagination, the costumes of the show come from the dawn of modern science, from the discoveries and inventions that led to the Industrial Revolution — everything from the steam locomotive to the electrical power to electro-magnetic waves. Celebrating the advancement of science, the costumes transport the audience to a time somewhere midway between the past and the future, somewhere that’s a merging of two time periods.

In other words, you won’t be able to find anything like this show anywhere else, because of the imagination and creativity inherent in the storyline, costumes and setting.
