Women-Owned Businesses in Costa Mesa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As we celebrate International Women\u2019s Day on March 8, we wanted to call out the huge number of businesses owned by women in Costa Mesa. Per the <em>Orange County Business Journal<\/em>, the 39 largest businesses owned by women generated a collective $4.2 billion in 2021 revenue. Women-owned businesses are definitely powerhouses in the OC, but what about Costa Mesa specifically? Well, this city\u2019s no exception! The LAB began its journey to combat what they call retail monotony in 1993, when it was recycled from a night-vision goggle factory to the fun, urban and artsy retail and dining center it is today. As they say, \u201cFrom clothes to candles, beer to bags, jewelry to jackfruit nachos, the women who have set-up shop at the Anti-Mall are a force to be reckoned with.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From left to right, Patricia Barkenhagen is co-owner of Bootlegger\u2019s Brewery. Read more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orangecoast.com\/features\/six-female-brewery-owners-in-o-c-who-are-shattering-their-industrys-glass-ceiling\/\">women brewers in OC<\/a> here. House of Inspiration says they \u201cserve as a culturally inclusive metaphysical oasis\u201d where people can enhance their spiritual journeys, by owners Marlene Vargas and Alex Naranjo. And Thea Merrit is the founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.econowca.com\/\">Eco Now<\/a> at The LAB. Currently, The CAMP lists 8 businesses as women owned; the three featured here are: at left, Natasha Quinn, owner of P\u00fcrre Boutique, a little oasis of unique new and vintage finds along with decor for your home and essential beauty items. Second, tattoo legend Kari Barba has been operating legacy shop Outer Limits Tattoo at the CAMP since 1983. Looks like she\u2019s having a blast! And third, arguably one of the most well-known female business owners in Costa Mesa is Rachel Klemek, the owner of Blackmarket Bakery. Besides her store at The CAMP, she also has two more stores in San Diego. But what makes her so well known? Founded by Ana in 2022, The Salon\u2019s mission is to continue that sense of harmony through their care for their clients\u2019 hair with a focus on well-being and health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hadley and Ren was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hadleyandren.com\/our-story\">founded by Cynthia<\/a>, who used floral design to find her way through a period of immense grief and loss. Now, she uses floral design to bring joy and beauty into the lives of her clients. Each design is bespoke, inspired, and instilled with her passion, which you can see and feel with a single visit to the shop.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the newest additions to The OC Mix, <a href=\"https:\/\/balboagold.com\/pages\/about-me\">Balboa Gold<\/a> is owned by Savannah, who is excited to use her shop as a way to express her creativity and provide unique pieces. Her shop sells curated and crafted jewelry items, specializing in permanent pieces. Davis <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gabrielle Dion is another well-known Costa Mesa business owner, a mixologist extraordinaire turned owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/the-mixing-glass.shoplightspeed.com\/\">The Mixing Glass<\/a>, a specialty cocktail store in Costa Mesa. <a href=\"https:\/\/voiceofoc.org\/2022\/07\/panoringan-the-mixing-glass-prepares-for-its-next-chapter-plus-national-ice-cream-month\/\">Voice of OC did a piece on Gaby last summer<\/a> as she opened her new, bigger retail space at Harbor and Adams. Not only selling specialty liquors, beer and wine, you can also get high-end products to make your cocktails, mixers, cocktail ice, condiments and even seasonal produce. Gaby offers cocktail-making classes focused on carrying local products by women-owned businesses whenever possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">South Coast Plaza<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelcostamesa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Molly-Unger-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10171\" width=\"837\" height=\"987\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.travelcostamesa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Molly-Unger-2.png 630w, https:\/\/www.travelcostamesa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Molly-Unger-2-254x300.png 254w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 837px) 100vw, 837px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Photo by Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Coast Plaza is a world-renowned shopping center featuring hundreds of shops, award-winning eats, and year-round events. And for the first time in its 50+ years of history, a woman is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ocregister.com\/2021\/12\/20\/status-update-south-coast-plaza-taps-first-female-general-manager-new-urgent-care-opens-in-irvine\/\">general manager of the entire center<\/a>. Her decades of leadership experience have made her integral to the inner workings of the organization, which is a staple of the Costa Mesa and larger Orange County communities. Of the four members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ocfair.com\/about-us\/staff\/\">OCFEC executive staff<\/a>, three are women, each bringing a unique set of experience and skills to continue improving the organization year by year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">City Government&#8230;and even Travel Costa Mesa!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many other women-owned businesses in Costa Mesa, and women have also held high places in city government \u2013 Costa Mesa\u2019s city manager Lori Ann Farrell Harrison had some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=462618731714063\">thoughts to share<\/a> to celebrate Women\u2019s History Month (she was the first woman to hold the position, and has held it since 2019).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelcostamesa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Unknown.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10223\" width=\"840\" height=\"862\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.travelcostamesa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Unknown.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/www.travelcostamesa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Unknown-292x300.jpeg 292w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And even here at Travel Costa Mesa, we\u2019re proud to say that we\u2019re an all-woman staff too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Costa Mesa Historical Society tells a great history of women who have been important to the city\u2019s development. Costa Mesa\u2019s first female city council member, Norma Hertzog, even has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/socal\/daily-pilot\/news\/story\/2019-12-18\/costa-mesa-to-name-lions-park-community-center-after-citys-first-female-mayor\">community center named after her<\/a>. Visit the Costa Mesa Historical Society\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.costamesahistory.org\/\">website<\/a> for more great tidbits and <a href=\"http:\/\/costamesahistory.org\/history\/bessie-lounsberry-a-most-remarkable-woman\/\">stories<\/a> of how women impacted this community, then and today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even the new <a href=\"http:\/\/ocma.art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Or<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelcostamesa.com\/play\/arts-and-museums\/mu\/orange-county-museum-of-art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ange County Museum of Art<\/a>, originally started by its 13 female founders, has an <a href=\"https:\/\/ocma.art\/exhibitions\/13-women-variation-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exhibition<\/a> honoring the women pioneering the museum&#8217;s collection. Did we mention that OCMA&#8217;s CEO and Director is a woman too?
