David LANG: New Work for Quartet and Choir*
Join the Danish String Quartet and the Danish National Girls’ Choir for an extraordinary evening of music that transcends genres and generations. Featuring a stunning new commissioned work by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang, this collaboration between two of Denmark’s most celebrated ensembles promises to be a powerful celebration of artistry and innovation.
Renowned for impeccable musicianship, sophisticated artistry, exquisite clarity of ensemble, and an unmatched ability to play as one, the Grammy-nominated Danish String Quartet continues to solidify its place among the world’s finest string quartets. Since making its debut in 2002 at the Copenhagen Festival, the Danish String Quartet has become one of the most sought-after quartets in the world. A recipient of numerous awards and prestigious appointments, including Musical America’s 2020 Ensemble of the Year and the Borletti-Buitoni Trust, the Danish String Quartet was named a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist in 2013 and appointed to The Bowers Program (formerly CMS Two).
The Danish National Girls’ Choir, comprised of 50 young talents aged 16-22, is one of the finest girls’ choirs in the world. Founded in 1938 by the Danish Broadcasting Corporation, the choir originally focused on Danish songs but now boasts a diverse repertoire, including traditional hymns, pop songs, and contemporary classical works. The founding conductor of the choir was Mrs. Lis Jacobsen, who headed the ensemble from 1938 through 1961. In August 2023, English choral conductor Charlotte Rowan became the choir’s eighth conductor in its rich history.
*David Lang’s New Work was commissioned by Danish Broadcasting Corporation, Arts & Lectures at University of California Santa Barbara, Carnegie Hall, La Jolla Music Society, Philharmonic Society of Orange County, Stanford Live, and Washington Performing Arts.
