Event Description

Spend an uplifting evening with Samin Nosrat as she discusses her new book, GOOD THINGS, on stage with Los Angeles-based food critic for The New York Times, Tejal Rao. Samin will share stories around the inspiration for the cookbook, her development and selection of the recipes, and the culinary rituals she shares with close friends. In an evening about creativity and connection, Samin will remind us how cooking can not only nourish our bodies but also satiate our desire for kinship and community.

About Samin:
As an undergraduate studying English at UC Berkeley, Samin took a detour into the kitchen at Chez Panisse restaurant that's happily determined the course of her life and career. Since 2000, she's pursued her twin passions of food and words with equal vigor, aiming to create work that inspires, creates community, and raises cultural, social and environmental awareness. Samin learned to cook at Chez Panisse, in Italy alongside Benedetta Vitali and Dario Cecchini, and at (the no longer extant) Eccolo in Berkeley. She studied poetry with Bob Hass, Shakespeare with Stephen Booth, and journalism with Michael Pollan. Alice Waters and farmer Bob Cannard have taught her more about land stewardship than anyone else. Her first book is the #1 New York Times Bestselling, James Beard Award-winning Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat: Mastering the Elements of Good Cooking, which is illustrated by the inimitable Wendy MacNaughton.  A documentary series based on the book is now streaming on Netflix. She was also a food columnist for the New York Times Magazine from 2017 to 2021 and continue to contribute to the Magazine and NYT Cooking from time to time. In 2020, she launched Home Cooking, an award-winning, 4-ish part podcast to help listeners figure out what to cook (and keep them company) during the quarantine with her good friend Hrishikesh Hirway. But mostly, she lives to cook and eat with her friends, garden and swim, hang out with her pup, sleep under the stars, and read and write and listen to good music.

About Tejal:
Tajal is a critic at large for the Food section of The New York Times, based in Los Angeles. Tejal and Samin met working at the New York Times, where both of them contribute in various ways to the Food section, NYT Cooking, and The New York Times Magazine. Their shared love of pups, gardening, and books of all kinds fuels their friendship.
