Weekend Studio: Experiment, Fail, Repeat
Los Angeles–based artist Steve Roden created dynamic abstract compositions with a variety of media, often referencing sound, architectural forms, and ideas of chance. Inspired by Roden’s embrace of productive failure and limitation, participants will create layered compositions using sketches of built environments, oil pastel, and Sumi ink. These works will be ripped, cut, torn, and reassembled into new artworks that emphasize experimentation and discovery through risk-taking. Visitors can explore Roden’s work in our exhibition Steve Roden: wandering.
Tickets are $10 or free for residents of Costa Mesa. Advance registration is required, and space is limited. Overflow seating may be available with modified materials. Registrants that arrive more than 15 minutes past the start time cannot be guaranteed entry.
Weekend Studio workshops invite artists of all experience levels to engage with current exhibitions through creative, hands-on activities. Workshops involve materials that are suitable for ages 6 and up only, and all families must sit together for the duration of the program.
