Weekend Studio: What Can A Painting Be?
Contemporary artist Laura Owens and the impressionist painters of the Gardena High School Art Collection often transform real objects, places, and people into abstract representations of the world around us. Participants will take colors, shapes, lines, and textures from personal images and use them to build layered, unexpected paintings. Explore Laura Owens’s work and the Gardena High School Art Collection on view in the 2025 California Biennial: Desperate, Scared, But Social.
Tickets are $10 or free for residents of Costa Mesa. Advance registration is required, and space is limited. Overflow seating may be available with modified materials. Registrants that arrive more than 15 minutes past the start time cannot be guaranteed entry.
Weekend Studio workshops invite artists of all experience levels to engage with current exhibitions through creative, hands-on activities. Workshops involve materials that are suitable for ages 6 and up only, and all families must sit together for the duration of the program.
