Weekend Events in Costa Mesa

Posted on September 19, 2013 | 10:04am

Before we set the clocks back and fully recognize that it’s no longer summer, there are some great events in Costa Mesa this weekend that will help postpone that reality.  From inspirational talks and an art exhibition to rock climbing and a sports themed fashion show, the City of the Arts is host to some fun events to fill your weekend and help ease you into the upcoming cooler climate.

Starting tomorrow, the TEDx Orange Coast annual conference will be at Segerstrom Center for the Arts.  We previously highlighted this inspiring event in our blog with some more details on the TEDx series.  This year’s theme is “Beautiful Minds” and features dozens of speakers who provide insight to their lives through a story-telling format.  The conference will be Friday and Saturday and is full of talks that are each less than 18 minutes long and designed to educate, inform, inspire, entertain and more.  For tickets and other TEDx Orange Coast information, click here.

From humble beginnings to Grammy Award winners, a small collective of little known veteran musicians from Cuba known as the Buena Vista Social Club burst onto the music scene in 1997 with their unique brand of Latin jazz and ballads.

Their star continued to rise the following year in 1998 when film maker Wim Wenders’ Oscar nominated documentary received wide acclaim.  An international tour followed the film and the Buena Vista Social Club went on to become a major influence on the emergence of Latin sound in popular music.

The theme for this year’s TEDx Orange Coast annual conference is “Beautiful Minds.”  The definition of a “Beautiful Mind” can be interpreted in many different ways by many different people.  Like song lyrics, or a painting, the term “Beautiful Minds” is open to interpretation and is only limited to one’s imagination.

Segerstrom Center for the Arts 2013-2014 Season Preview

Posted on August 13, 2013 | 2:08pm

The 2013-14 Season at Segerstrom Center for the Arts brings the power of live performances to the stage in Costa Mesa. As the leading performing arts venue in Orange County, SCFTA features Broadway hits, acclaimed musicians, international dance troupes, family friendly productions and much more.

Last night, season ticket holders, group buyers and members of the media were invited to a special preview of the upcoming season’s productions.  Bob Bucci, EVP of Marketing of Broadway Across America, hosted the event and set the tone for the night by wearing a cupcake costume!  SCFTA Executive Vice President Judy Morr also assisted in hosting duties, although she left the sweets-inspired wardrobe to Bucci.

The Pacific Symphony performed in the Arts Plaza at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts as part of the “Symphony in the Cities” series.  The free performance was wonderful opportunity to see world-class musicians perform and a great way to start the weekend.
